Just a reminder that the final stop for 2012 DCT is this weekend at Stingers.  It will be $1000 added bar table 9-ball.  Sign up at 11am, draw and tourney starts at noon.

Also, the 2012 DCT Finale will be December 2 - 4.  It will be a big table 10-ball event at Bullshooter's.  I'm aware the website has the wrong date; however, it will be corrected shortly.

In addition, players will only need to have played in ONE event throughout this year in order to qualify for the finale next month.  There are reasons for this change.  1.) Over the years, we have held at least 10 stops and required players to play in two events.  This year, it was lowered to 8 events, meaning less events to get qualified.  2.) Several players had expressed their desire to play in the Tucson event (when it was originally scheduled).  Due to a family emergency, I had to reschedule that event which made it impossible for some to get their second event in.  So, with that being said, if any players (who have not played this year) still desire to play in the finale next month, they can play this weekend and become qualified.

Hope to see you all Saturday at Stingers and/or at Bullshooters for the finale!

Thanks for supporting the DCT!

Dennis

Final 8 at StingersSaturday, October 8th, at Stinger’s in Glendale, was the place to be for women's 8-ball on the ten Diamond 7’ tables. It was the fifth stop on the 2011 Arizona Women’s Billiard Tour, but the first time that Stinger’s had held an event. Owner's Dale Hanson & Dana Micelli and staff, were more than willing to accommodate all of our needs. Stinger’s is a very spacious room with twelve 7’ tables, great food and a full bar to settle the nerves. In addition, between matches, you could partake in off-track betting, social poker, or watch sports on the many large screens throughout the bar.

Well, if you missed this one last year, you sure don’t want to miss it this year. We all had the privilege of watching some of the best billiards short of ESPN. All of the players in this tournament are local league players from the Phoenix area. This event is open to all active league players in this area, no matter what league you play for. If you were not represented last year, please be sure to ask your league operator about getting you in this year. Our first tournament, last year, had 51 players. This time we are looking for a lot

Final 8 from BullshootersStacy Allsup defeated Kristin Haney 9-8 to win Stop #4 at Bullshooters in Phoenix. This was Stacy's second tour win and along with fellow Las Vegan, Rebecca Wagner, they have won all four AWBT events this season. For Kristin Haney, of Prescott Valley, this second place finish, along with a fourth in April, proves she is still a woman to be reckoned with in the Arizona pool scene.

Play began Saturday with 26 ladies from the southwest and Wisconsin. After the computer draw, one bracket in particular, was loaded with AWBT point leaders. Susan Williams had a first round win over Susan "Madhatter" Mello 7-2, but in the next round she lost to point leader, Rebecca Wagner, 7-5. Then Rebecca lost 7-5 to Kristin Haney who had just beaten Sara Miller. Just like that, four of the tournament favorites were in the loser's bracket. Only Wagner and Mello would make it out to play on Sunday.

Final 8 at the AWBT from Pockets in Tucson, AZRebecca Wagner of Las Vegas, Nevada, won the 3rd stop of the Arizona Women’s Billiard Tour. The big table, 9-ball event was held at Pockets in Tucson August 6th-7th. She beat Susan Williams 9-3 in the one-race final to win her second AWBT event of the 2011 season.
Lenny Johnson,  owner of Pockets,  added $300 to the tournament and 21 ladies from Tucson, Phoenix, Las Vegas ,and Wisconsin came out to play. The AWBT has been using a tournament program called IngenPool Pro v.3.0. The program has a feature that keeps players from the same region having to face each other in the first round. No one wants to travel and then face your road partner in the first round. The program has many other great features and makes running the tournaments a pleasure.

Congratulations to Paul Grande for completing his undefeated run in taking down the 5th Stop of the Desert Classic Tour from Bullshooter's in Phoenix, Arizona.  On July 9th-10th a much smaller crowd than normal on the tour came out to give this Big Table 8-ball event a try.  With the smaller field of 22 players and the $1000 added money, players were very hungry to take home the cash.

Saturday, June 11th, the AWBT stopped into "Kitty's Lounge" for a weekend of ladies bar table 9-ball. Located in the Central Phoenix area, Kitty's has been a longtime tournament sponsor and home to a women's BCA National 8-ball Championship team.  Eighteen ladies from Arizona and Nevada made up the field.

The game: 9-ball - Race to 7. The AWBT uses an alternate break format using the "Magic Rack".

*Highlights of the first day.

Owner/player Kitty Carroll, that for her big day of hosting, she would show up with a pulled muscle in her leg. It was painful to watch her tend to her duties as bar manger and then limp over and try to play competitive pool. When she was sent to the losers side in round 3 by Leandrea Gaff,  it looked like her day might be mercifully over early. Instead she showed a lot of grit in beating a strong Justine Bishop with the tournaments most amazing run out 7-5. She then beat Pat Shultz to make it to Day 2 on Sunday.

BCA Champions LeagueThe In-house BCA Champions League is set to start up the 5th season on June 29th, 2011.  We will be holding a Captains Meeting at 7 p.m. on June 15th and any potential players should try to be in attendence.  We will also be hosting an 8-ball Tournament starting at 7:30 p.m. that night, open to anyone.  Stingers Bar & Grill has been home to the league the past 4 seasons.  The league started with only 6 teams and has grown into a full field of 10 teams (5 Players/Team/Week).  The 2011 Winter/Spring Session contained the most competitive group of players any league in Arizona has seen in a very long time.  Numerous State, Regional and National Champions were found throughout the tough field of teams.  In addition, there were many 5's, 6's and 7 rated players mixing it up with the big boys and causing many upsets throughout the season!  The league has it's own redefined custom handicapping system

It's no secret that the Arizona Pool Scene is one of the biggest and best pool scene's anywhere in the nation.  There are leagues, tournaments and action matches all over the state on any given night of the week.  From handicapped 5 & Under tournaments to OPEN Tour events such as the Desert Classic Tour (DCT) and the Arizona Women's Billiards Tour (AWBT).  But for the last 2 or 3 years whenever you asked anyone what the big money added tournament this coming weekend was you knew the answer was Scotch Doubles.  And usually there were 2 or 3 different ones going on at the same time across the valley.  Metro Sportz, Kitty's, Stinger's, The OX, River City, Main Street, Skip & Jans and Bullshooters hold some of the largest Scotch Tourneys in the State on any given weekend.  Many of which range in the combined 14 & Under to 16 & Under Handicap for the duo of players.  Over at The Ox, Julie and Rick cater to the lessor ratings by offering a staggering low of a 10 & Under Handicap which limits the field to 3's, 4's, 5's and 6's.

Every May hundreds of Arizona Pool Players flock to Las Vegas to compete in any one of the League Sanctioned Tournaments.  From ACS to BCAPL to VNEA, APA and TAP, players of all skill levels turn out to take home the championships.  In the ACS this year, Arizona represented well with Bernie Store and Steve Stowers of Mesa, AZ, taking home the 64 team championship undefeated.  When the Largest Tournament in the world rolled into town the Arizona Players lined up to take a shot at the money.  The BCAPL is well known as the Largest and Greatest Pool Tournament in the world.  And Arizona showed up to get their share of the cash.

Susan WilliamsIn the 3rd year of Running the BCAPL Team Warm-up Tournament from the Stingers (Formerly Sweet Tooth) Location, the response was not as large as in the past.  In the previous years, 14 teams and 12 teams came out to play on the exact simulated tournament as the National Event that runs in Las Vegas every May.  Stingers was aware of numerous other tournaments that scheduled on top of this event this year and understood how difficult it was for players to form teams of 5 for this event.  In the wake of the low turnout of only 4 teams of players (Including 1 team that came all the way from Globe, AZ), Stingers still wanted to allow a way for the faithful to get the necessary "warm-up" for Vegas and switched the tournament to a Singles Event.

16 Players signed up for the $10 entry singles tournament where Men's players raced to 5 games and all non-master women raced to 3 games.  Susan Williams was the lone woman's masters player and thus also raced to 5 games in this alternate break format tournament.  Stinger's wanted to also support the players that supported the Team Tournament and added $10/player to the prize fund.

Final 8, Winner Rebecca in the Red Shirt     The Arizona Women's Billiard Tour began their 2011 season in Phoenix at Bullshooters with a $400 added 9-ball on the 9' table tournament. Bullshooters has been a generous longtime supporter of the AWBT. With their 20,000 sq. ft. they easily accommodated the 28 ladies who showed up from all parts of Arizona, Las Vegas and even Wisconsin. Their capable staff still had time to take care of a ‘broomstick’ tournament, ping pong tournament, dart tournament, and even Jr. pool league on Sunday. A true three ring circus. Owners, Mike and Julie Bates, and Lenny Orlando seem to be doing a lot of things right and making a lot of people happy.

Jerry Stuckart and Mitch EllermanWhen you talk about Arizona the weather is always a 'hot' topic.  But something else that was on the 'burners' this past weekend, April 16th, 2011, was the BCAPL Warm-Up Tournament for the National Championships just a few weeks away.  Stingers once again held this event to get players the best environment to be as prepared as possible going into Nationals which is held at the Riviera Casino & Resort from May 11th - 22nd.

This first warm-up event was for 8-ball Singles.  Usually this event runs both a Men's Event and a Women's Event, but the two were combined together this year as the AWBT (Arizona Women's Billiards Tour) was running their first event just down the street.  3 ladies still decided to show to play with the men.  A Women's Open player would race to 4 games, Women's Advanced would be equal to a Men's Open player and they both would race to 5, A Women's Master would be equal to a Men's Advanced and they both would race to 6 and a Masters Men's player would race to 7 games.

Pete LhotkaThe 3rd Stop on the Desert Classic Tour took the show on the road down to Tucson Arizona.  Pockets was the destination and 14.1 (aka "Straight Pool") was the game.  The DCT Tour is well known for offering all different types of games in all different types of venues in various parts of Arizona.  This Tour Stop was also the State Championship for 14.1.

It is well known that 2 of the best 14.1 players in Arizona are Bernie Pettipiece and Jimmy Mendoza.  So when only Bernie stepped into the pool room all eyes were on him to try and repeat this event.  But 19 other players were also on hand and ready to knock the king off of his thrown.  One of those players was all around specialist Pete Lhotka, who made the trip over to Tucson from Yuma, AZ.  Pete is one of the most loyal competitors on the DCT Tour and is always a threat in any event to cash high.

Dennis Orender & Chuck EvansOn March 19th and 20th, 2011, the Desert Classic Tour once again made it’s trip over to Stingers Sports Bar & Grill in Glendale, AZ. The event again was Bar Table 8-ball on the Diamond Smart Tables. 38 players came out to try and take home the cash and the Points List points which help determine the top 8 seeded players in the finale at the end of the year. This was Stop #2 on the Tour for 2011 and all the big names showed up to claim stake.

On the winners side of the board it came down to Mike Sandoval beating Ramon Rodriguez, Bobby Emmons beating Jerry Stuckart, Tres Kane beating George Teyechea and Chuck Evans beating Mitch Ellerman to complete Saturday’s play as the Final 4 of the winners’ side and to get in the money.

Joe Massey and Brian ReichSaturday, March 12 Skip & Jan's welcomed 25 scotch doubles teams to their inaugural event on the new Diamond bar boxes.  There was great competition amongst teams from across the valley with some early upsets and a few unexpected routs.  Brian Reich and Joe Massey waited and watched who their opponent would be in the Hot Seat match.  Jerry Stuckart and Chad Barber were battling with Doc Rice and Phil Anderson to get that chance.  The match went hill-hill and Jerry played safe.  Doc was able to kick 2 rails and make contact and after all the balls stopped rolling he was safe.  Chad made a good hit, but Phil had a shot and they ran out a tough rack for the win 10-9.  Doc and Phil were pretty worn out after that match which allowed Brian and Joe to pitched a 10-0 shutout to advance to the hot seat.  Doc and Phil chose to forfeit their next match and take home their guaranteed 3rd place finish prize of $280.

Stop #2 of the 2011 DCT will be held this weekend (March 19/20th) at Stingers.  Sign up will be at 11am, tourney draw will be at noon.  The tourney will be bar table 8 ball on the Diamonds.  If you are getting ready for Vegas, this will be a great warm up event.  Hope to see you all there.

In anticipation of the upcoming BCA 8 ball event in Las Vegas, we will be implementing a few rule changes for the DCT 8 ball event this weekend at Stinger's.  We will be switching to alternate break format.  Several discussions have been generated surrounding this change, and many players believe that it will be better for the tour.  In addition, the A+ players will be racing to 9 games as opposed to 10.  These changes may or may not be permanent.  It's just something we have decided to try after hearing from numerous players.  Hopefully, it will increase the participation and even the playing field for all.  If you all have any questions or suggestions, please feel free to email me or track me down at the next event.  Hope to see you all at Stingers!

I just finished installing 12 brand new 7' Diamond Smart tables in Skip and Jan's today. These are the newly redesigned rails, and they play like a million bucks! This room is really becoming the place to play. No other place in Arizona can top their equipment.

I am happy I get to be a part of rebuilding this pool hall and to put Skip and Jan's back on the map. The hardest part is out of the way. The ground work is done. Now it is up to the players to bring the action there and make this room the premier pool hall in Arizona.

Bobby Emmons and Dennis OrenderOn December 3rd - 5th, 2010, the qualified Desert Classic Tour players came together for the 3rd Year Finale! This time instead of paying the out of pocket costs to host the tournament in a local casino and truck Diamond Smart Tables in, the decision was made to play it at Bullshooter’s in Phoenix, AZ. The location wasn’t the only change as the game moved from the small 7’ bar box Tables up to 9’ Gold Crowns. But for the 3rd consecutive year the finale was 10-ball. Players had to qualify to play in this $4000 added tournament by playing in a minimum of 2 tour stops throughout the 2010 Schedule. A Schedule which included 8-ball, 9-ball, 10-ball, 1 pocket and 14.1 events and also a few B and Below stops as well. At the end of the last tour stop the points were calculated and the top 8 points leaders were given free entry into the finale tournament and also benefitted by being seeded in the tournament. Those 8 players in order:  Nick De Leon, Dennis Orender, Tony Confalone, Pete Lhotka, Tres Kane, Bobby Emmons, Chris Paradowski and Gus Briseno.

The 2010 Desert Classic Tour Finale will be held at Bullshooter's on December 3-5, 2010.  After speaking with some of the members of the tour, we have decided to give big table 10-ball a try for the Finale this year.  The tourney sign up will start at 4pm on Friday, December 3.  The tourney draw will be done at 5pm, with the tourney starting immediately after the draw on Friday.  All entry fees, sidepots, and races will remain as they were throughout the 2010 season.  There will be raffles and possibly a second chance tourney for this year as well.   Please come out and support Bullshooter's for the Finale.  As always, the event will be livestreamed at http://desertclassictour.com.  Thank you all for supporting the DCT in 2010 and hope to see you all there.

The 2010 Desert Classic Tour has come to an end with only the Big Money Added Finale left to play.  This time around it will be held at a Local Pool Room instead of a hotel/casino.  Bullshooters once again steps up to host this 3 day event.  The dates are December 3rd-5th with play starting at 5 p.m. on Friday the 3rd.

Another change from the 1st two seasons is that the Finale will move from Diamond 7' tables to Gold Crown 9' tables.  The game is the same and what better way to end the 20(10-Ball) Season than with 10-ball.

Preacher Ronn's One Pocket Tournament is held the last Saturday of every month at Kolby's in Tempe.  This past Saturday Kolby's was a Gladiator Arena for pool players.  By 11:30am the room was buzzing with 23 of the best One Pocket players in the State and even the World for that matter. Players gathered to do battle in this race to two, double elimination format.  As usual, Jimmy Sears our tournament director did a great job and matches got underway right on time following the brief players meeting where we discussed the "Four Ball" rule.  We played this new rule in anticipation of next weekends SW One Pocket Shootout so that everyone could have a chance to experience the difference this rule makes.
